WHAT DEFILES?

Matt 15 Mark 7 Luke
10 And he called the people to him 14 And he called the people to him
      again,
and said to them,   and said to them,
"Hear   "Hear me, all of you,
  and understand:   and understand:
11 not 15 there is nothing outside a man*
what goes into the mouth   which by going into him
  defiles a man,*   can defile him;
  but   but the things
what comes out of the mouth,   which come out of a man
this defiles a man."   are what defile him."
16* [Let anyone with ears to hear listen!]
12 Then 17 And when he had entered the house,
      and left the people,
  the disciples came   his disciples
  and said to him,
  "Do you know that
  the Pharisees were offended
  when they heard this saying?"
13 He answered,
  "Every plant which
  my heavenly Father
  has not planted
  will be rooted up.
14 Let them alone;
  they are blind guides.
And if a blind man      [see Luke 6:39 above]
  leads a blind man,
both will fall into a pit."
15 But Peter said to him,
"Explain the parable to us."   asked him about the parable.
16 And he said, 18 And he said to them,
"Are you also still   "Then are you also
  without understanding?   without understanding?
17 Do you not see that   Do you not see that
whatever goes into the mouth   whatever goes into a man
      from outside
      cannot defile him,
    19 since it enters,
      not his heart
passes into the stomach,   but his stomach,
and so passes on?   and so passes on?"
(Thus he declared all foods clean.)
    20 And he said,
18 But what comes out of   "What comes out of
  the mouth   a man
  proceeds from the heart,
and this defiles a man.   is what defiles a man.
19 For 21 For from within,
out of the heart   out of the heart of man,
come evil thoughts,   come evil thoughts,
      fornication,*
      theft,*
  murder,   murder,
  adultery,   adultery,
  fornication,*
  theft,*
  false witness,
    22 coveting,
      wickedness,
      deceit,
      licentiousness,
      envy,
  slander.   slander,
      pride,
      foolishness.
20 These are what 23 All these evil things come
      from within,
defile a man;   and they defile a man."
  but to eat
  with unwashed hands
  does not defile a man."

* Note: Mark 7:16 is not found in Greek mss. of this gospel before 400 CE.
Its presence in mss. of the Byzantine recension & the Latin Vulgate
led to its inclusion in the traditional numbering of verses in Mark.
Modern translators generally follow critical editions in consigning it to a footnote.
