Mark 4

Thom 20**

      1 The disciples said to Jesus: "Tell us
        what the kingdom of heaven is like."
30    And he said, 2 He said to them:
    "<How shall> we compare*
    the kingdom of God,
    or what parable shall we use for it?
 31    As a grain of mustard seed,   "It is like a mustard seed.
      3 [It] is the smallest of all seeds.*
    which, when <it is> sown 4 But when it falls
    upon the <earth>,   upon prepared soil,
    is the smallest of all the seeds*
    <upon the> earth;
32   yet when it is sown
    <it rises up>
    and becomes the greatest of all shrubs,
    and puts forth large branches,   it produces a large plant
    so that the birds of the air*
    can make nests in its shade."   and becomes a shelter
        for the birds of the air.*

**Note: In Matt, Mark & Luke this is part of a parable cluster.
In the gospel of Thomas it appears as an independent aphorism.
