**Note: The opening of Mark is debated. The original text of codex Sinaiticus omits "υἱοῦ θεοῦ" but a later hand added these words -- without definite articles -- in the margin. Was this to restore words that the first scribe overlooked? Or was it to make Sinaiticus conform to 4th c. doctrinal orthodoxy? Suspecting the latter, some recent critical editions of the Greek NT put this phrase in brackets or relegate it to a footnote. Its inclusion here is supported by Vaticanus and other early mss. (Bezae Cantabrigiensis & the Freer gospels) that together are as important as Sinaiticus. |
