  Greek synopsis

 1    OPENING
Matt 1   Mark 1  Luke 1
1 The book of the genealogy 1 The beginning* of the gospel
of Jesus Christ,   of Jesus Christ,
the son of David, ** [the] Son of God.
  the son of Abraham.
1 Inasmuch as many have undertaken
to compile a narrative of the things
          which have been accomplished
          among us,
2 just as they were delivered to us
by those who from the beginning*
          were eyewitnesses
          and ministers of the word,
3 it seemed good to me also,
          having followed all things closely
          for some time past,
to write an orderly account for you,
          most excellent Theophilus,
4 that you may know the truth
          concerning the things
of which you have been informed.

**Note: The opening of Mark is debated. The original text of codex Sinaiticus omits "Son of God" but a later hand added these words -- without definite articles -- in the margin. Was this to restore words that the first scribe overlooked? Or was it to make Sinaiticus conform to 4th c. doctrinal orthodoxy? Suspecting the latter, some recent critical editions of the Greek NT put this phrase in brackets or relegate it to a footnote. Its inclusion here is supported by Vaticanus and other early mss. (Bezae Cantabrigiensis & the Freer gospels) that together are just as important as Sinaiticus
