ELIJAH  COMES FIRST

Matt 17 Mark 9 Luke
9 And as they were coming  9  And as they were coming
down the mountain,   down the mountain,
Jesus commanded them,   he charged them
"Tell no one the vision,   to tell no one what they had seen,
until the Son of man   until the Son of man
is raised from the dead."   should have risen from the dead.
10 So they kept the matter to themselves,
      questioning
what the rising from the dead meant.
10 And the disciples asked him, 11 And they asked him,
"Then why do the scribes say   "Why do the scribes say
that first Elijah must come?"   that first Elijah must come?"
11 He replied, 12 And he said to them,
"Elijah does come,   "Elijah does come first
  and he is to restore all things;   to restore all things;

  and how is it written

[see Matt 17:12 below]

  of the Son of man,*
that he should suffer* many things
      and be treated with contempt?
12 but I tell you 13 But I tell you
that Elijah has already come,   that Elijah has come,
and they did not know him,   and
but did to him    they did to him
whatever they pleased.   whatever they pleased,
as it is written of him."
So also the Son of man will suffer*

 [see Mark 9:12 above]

  at their hands."
13 Then the disciples understood
that he was speaking to them
  of John the Baptist.
