Thomas 89**

      37 While he was speaking,
        a Pharisee asked him
        to dine with him;
        so he went in
        and sat at table.

[see Matt 15:1-2]

 [see Mark 7:1-2 38 The Pharisee was astonished
        to see that

    he did not first wash
        before dinner.

And the Lord said to him,  1  Jesus said:

"Woe to you, scribes     "Now you   "Why do you
  and Pharisees     Pharisees
  for you cleanse the outside     cleanse the outside   cleanse the outside
  of the cup and of the plate,     of the cup and of the dish,   of the cup?
  but inside they are full     but inside you are full
  of distortion and rapacity.     of distortion and wickedness.

You blind Pharisee!   40 You fools!

Don't you understand
        Did not he    that the one
        who made the outside*   who made the inside*
            is also* the one
        make the inside* also?*   who made the outside?*
  First cleanse the inside

But give for alms
  of the cup and of the plate,     those things that are within;
  that the outside     and behold,
  also may be clean.     everything is clean for you.

**Note: In the gospel of Thomas this appears as an independent aphorism.
